Redefining Greatness

Introduction

Take some time to introduce any new people to the group.

!! REMEMBER: the goal is not to complete all the questions. These questions are provided as a guide. Spend some time preparing ahead of time and pick out your favorite ones !!

Message Recap

Big Idea: In God’s kingdom, greatness is not about status, recognition, or power. Greatness serves the least and counts itself among the least.

This week’s message showed us how upside down the kingdom of God really is. While the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest, Jesus redefined greatness completely. He showed them that true greatness is not found in climbing higher, but in stooping lower. Greatness is not measured by how many people serve you, but by your willingness to serve others. And greatness is not just seen in how we treat the least, but also in how we come to God ourselves, with childlike humility, trust, and dependence.

Warm Up

  • When you were growing up, what did “greatness” look like to you?

  • Who is someone you’ve seen in life that modeled real humility and service well?

  • Do you think it is easier for you to compare yourself to others or to serve others? Why?

Greatness Serves the Least –

Read Mark 9:33–37

  • Where are you most tempted to measure people by what they can do for you?

  • Who are the people in your life that are easiest to overlook, rush past, or keep at a distance?

  • When you are stressed or busy, what kind of people tend to get the worst version of you?

  • Is there anyone you have quietly placed on a “lower shelf” in your heart? What put them there?

  • What usually drives that in you — pride, hurt, annoyance, disagreement, inconvenience, politics, or something else?

  • In your daily life, who gets your patience, kindness, and energy first? What does that reveal?

  • Where might Jesus be calling you to slow down and really see someone you’ve been missing?

  • What would serving “the least” actually look like for you this week at home, at work, or at church?

Greatness Counts Itself Among the Least

Read Mark 10:13–16

  • What do you think it means to receive the kingdom like a child?

  • What is hard for you about coming to God with dependence instead of strength?

  • Where in your life are you still trying to prove yourself, hold it together, or rely on your own ability?

  • When you feel weak, lacking, or needy, how do you usually respond?

  • What would it look like for you this week to come to God more honestly and simply pray, “Father, help”?

The Danger of Self-Sufficiency

Read Mark 10:17–27

  • What stands out to you most about the rich young ruler?

  • Why can self-sufficiency be such a barrier to surrender?

  • What are you most tempted to build your identity on besides Christ?

  • In what area of your life are you most tempted to trust yourself instead of God?

  • How does this passage remind us that salvation and change are things only God can accomplish?

Living It Out

  • Which truth do you most need right now: Greatness serves the least or Greatness counts itself among the least?

  • What is one relationship where God may be calling you to humble yourself?

  • What is one practical way you can serve someone this week with no thought of what you’ll get back?

  • What is one area where you need to stop pretending you’re strong and start bringing God your need?

  • What would change in your life if you truly believed that kingdom greatness looks like humility?

Prayer

  • Ask God to expose pride, comparison, and any partiality in your heart.

  • Ask Him to help you see people the way He sees people.

  • Ask Him to give you the humility to serve the overlooked and love without ranking people.

  • Ask Him to make you more childlike in your trust and dependence.

  • Ask Him to help you walk in true kingdom greatness this week.
