“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

Scripture teaches us that faith is essential in the life of a believer. The Bible tells us, “By grace you have been saved through faith” (Ephesians 2:8–9). Grace makes salvation available, but faith is what reaches out and takes hold of it. Without faith, there is no salvation. Without faith, we don’t live in the grace God has already given.

God doesn’t just call us to start with faith; He calls us to walk by faith. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Scripture goes even further and tells us, “The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17). All throughout scripture God is inviting us to live by faith. That we would by faith not just grab hold of salvation, but we would continue by faith to reach out and grab hold of everything else that God has for our lives.

Over and over in Scripture, we see how much faith matters. In Mark 2, when the paralyzed man is lowered through the roof, Scripture says, “When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven you’” (Mark 2:5). Jesus didn’t just see the need; He saw the faith. And that faith led to both spiritual and physical healing.

In Matthew 8, Jesus encounters a Roman centurion and “marveled” at his faith (Matthew 8:10). I imagine that it might be a bit hard to impress Jesus, but faith got His attention. Jesus tells him, “As you have believed, so let it be done for you” (Matthew 8:13). In other words, the level of his faith set the level of his experience.

Later, Jesus returns to His hometown, and Scripture tells us something sobering: “Now He could do no mighty work there… because of their unbelief” (Mark 6:5–6). It wasn’t that Jesus lacked the power; it was that His hometown lacked the faith.

Scripture is not saying that faith forces the hand of God to work; rather, it trusts the God who is already at work. Faith doesn’t force God to do good; it holds the hand of God who is good.  This isn’t about getting God to catch up with us and our faith. It’s about getting us, and our faith, to catch up with God.

THINK / Reflect on meaning

The enemy of faith is doubt. Doubt causes us to live in fear and to shrink back. It robs us of our voice and pulls us to the sidelines. Doubt sets us up to miss out on what faith enables us to experience.

Ask yourself: Where in my life do I struggle most with doubt?
Now ask: What would it look like to approach that area in faith?

The best things we can do to overcome doubt is to fuel our faith. When you fuel your faith then your doubts don’t stand a chance.

Here are a few biblical ways to fuel your faith:

  • Fuel your faith with God’s Word. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Find Scriptures that speak directly to what you’re facing and let God’s Word speak louder than your doubt. Memorize them. Speak them. Pray them over your life.
  • Remember God’s faithfulness. Take a moment to look back. Where has He come through before? What doors has He opened? Gratitude builds perspective, and perspective builds faith.
  • Get around faith-filled people. Faith is contagious, and so is doubt. If we constantly surround ourselves with fear, it’s hard to live with courage. But when we walk closely with people who trust God, speak life, and remind us of His promises, our faith gets stronger. Make a list of people who strengthen your faith and be intentional to spend more time with them.

PRAY / Trust God & talk it out with Him.

In Mark 9, a father comes to Jesus desperate for his son to be healed. Jesus tells him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” And in raw honesty the father cries out, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24).

That teaches us something powerful. God isn’t afraid of our doubt. One of the greatest things we can do with doubt is bring it to Him.

In prayer today:

  • Confess the places where you’re experiencing doubt
  • Ask Jesus, just like that father did, to help your unbelief
  • Ask God to strengthen your faith and give you courage to obey even when you can’t see the outcome

WORSHIP / Respond with worship.

As you worship today, let your focus shift from what you can see to who God is. Faith grows when we choose to magnify God instead of our circumstances. Worship reminds us of God’s power, His faithfulness, and His promises, even when the outcome is still unclear.

Take a moment and thank God for who He and name some specific characteristics your thankful for.  Declare your trust in who He is, what He has done and what He will do.

ACT / Live it out

Faith grows when it’s exercised. Today, don’t just think about faith — practice it.

  • What was I doubting yesterday that I’m going to choose to trust God with today?

DIG A LITTLE DEEPER

If you have some time you can read through Hebrews 11. This chapter is often called the “Hall of Faith” because it highlights men and women who trusted God even when they couldn’t see the outcome.
